Javier Manquillo could see his time at Liverpool cut short as the Premier League club consider cancelling his two-year loan a year early.

21-year-old Manquillo arrived from Atletico Madrid last summer in a two-year loan deal, but failed to impress in his first season on Merseyside as he struggled to nail down a place in the first team.

Brendan Rodgers initially put his faith in him as he started the season in favour with the Northern Irishman, but soon found himself consigned to the substitutes’ bench and at times missed out on the matchday squad altogether.

The midweek signing of Nathaniel Clyne, in a £12.5m deal from Southampton, means that Manquillo is likely to be second choice once more this season, and despite Glen Johnson’s departure this summer following the expiration of his contract it’s expected that Manquillo could return to Spain sooner rather than later.

Manquillo could move back to Atletico a year earlier than planned

Any return will require negotiations with Atletico given that the two-year move is in place, but with Liverpool’s recruitment drive showing no signs of slowing and Rodgers reported to believe the Spanish youth international will struggle to break into the squad, the deal could be severed at its halfway stage.
