Manchester City's Sergio Agüero has revealed his plans to re-join Atlético Independiente, the Argentinian club where he made his debut as a 15-year-old, when his contract expires in 2019.

The former Atlético Madrid striker has scored 94 goals in 141 appearances for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, lifting two Premier League titles and collecting a duo of League Cup winners’ medals in Eastlands.

Talks between Agüero and representatives of the North West club, about the option of adding an extra year onto his £150,000-a-week deal at the Etihad, have progressed slowly in recent months and the chances of that now happening appear slim.

“It’s clear to me that when my contract ends, after the World Cup [in Russia in 2018], I’m going to Independiente,” Agüero told radio station El Rojo En La Uno. “Here at the club they are great with me, they always told me that they were open if the chance of a transfer arises. But where am I going to go in Europe?

“No, when I go, when my contract ends, I’m going to Argentina to play for El Rojo. From Manchester, straight to Avellaneda.”

City are currently 10 points adrift of leaders Leicester City, with an as-yet-unscheduled game against Newcastle United in hand, and Agüero says his team-mates want to cancel the arrears and win the Premier League for outgoing manager Pellegrini.

The Chilean is set to be replaced by Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola at the end of the season in a managerial change which is likely to bring about a period of transition at the Etihad.

Agüero added: “It's pretty crazy that four months out you already know that your manager is going to leave and you also know who his successor is, but that's how it is for us.

“Hopefully we can win something so Pellegrini goes in the best way possible. And then we'll adapt to what Guardiola wants.”

Despite Agüero referring to his deal expiring in 2018, the club have confirmed he is contracted until 2019.
