Manchester United transfer news: Harry Kane insists he's 'looking forward to the future with Spurs' despite topping Louis van Gaal's wish list

The Independent can report that United's interest in Kane is genuine but the Tottenham striker has no plans on a transfer this summer

Harry Kane has reaffirmed his commitment to Tottenham Hotspur and says that he will be at the club next season, in spite of interest from Manchester United.

The 21-year-old was part of the England Under-21s team that lost their first group game of the European Championships against Portugal last night. Kane has become one of Louis Van Gaal's leading targets this summer with a valuation of around £50m after a remarkable breakthrough season at Spurs in which he scored 21 Premier League goals.

In February, the striker signed a new deal with Spurs that keeps him under contract until 2020, yet United’s interest in him is serious. Asked where he saw his future this summer, Kane said: “I am happy at Spurs. I am looking forward to the future with Spurs.”

In a further television interview he said that he was “aware” of the stories. “I have seen there is interest. But that is all I know. It is flattering to be interested and for other clubs to maybe be interested. But, as I say, I am happy at Spurs and I am looking forward to the future at Spurs.

"Tottenham are a big club. And that is the way people have to see it. I am at a big club now, I am enjoying my football and that is the way I am looking forward to next season."

On the pitch it was a difficult night for Kane who struggled on his own in attack and was often isolated against an excellent Portugal team that controlled the midfield. Their next game is on Sunday against Sweden - who beat Italy 2-1 yesterday - which Gareth Southgate’s team must win to have a hope of reaching the semi-final stage of the competition.

Kane said that it had not been easy losing Saido Berahino and John Stones to injury. “But that is what tournament football throws at you,” he said. “We have just got to make sure that we stick together. We will go away and look at what we have to do better – and we know there are things we can do better. But we will put it right for Sunday’s game and make sure that we are ready.

“We are a very, very good team but we haven’t been doing it in tournaments. As a country, we have to get behind each other. It starts on Sunday. We know what we have to do. I think you could see we played well [against Portugal]. It is fine margins and hopefully a few things will go our way. We will try and push on and there is a long way to go.

“We could have done better with certain things against Portugal. We had done well in qualifying. This is a high pressure game but how you deal with it is what makes you a top footballer. You have got to deal with those moments. There are definitely things that we can work on. We have got to go back, regroup and stick together. We have got to look forward to Sunday.”

The Under-21s manager Gareth Southgate defended his team’s performance and said that they could finish in the top two places in the group. “I don’t think there is any disgrace at all in our performance,” he said. “The lads are disappointed to have lost. I think a draw would have been a fair result. It was a cruel goal [from Joao Mario] to concede that followed a random series of events. I fully believe we can get out of the group.”
