Roma could offer Manchester United flop Memphis Depay a way out of Old Trafford in January after the Italian side identified him as a suitable replacement for African Cup of Nations-bound Mohamed Salah, according to reports in Italy.

Depay is currently out of Jose Mourinho’s plans at United with the Dutchman being afforded just three late substitute appearances in the Premier League this season and one start in the EFL Cup.

The 22-year-old, who joined United during Louis van Gaal’s reign in a £25m switch from PSV Eindhoven, has struggled to adapt to the Premier League, and after falling out of the former manager’s first-team plans, it appears Depay is no closer to convincing Mourinho that he deserves to start.

According to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Roma are keen on taking Depay away from United in January in order to boost their squad and cover the temporary departure of former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah, who is due to play in Egypt’s African Cup of Nations campaign.

The report adds that French side Lille are also keen on signing Depay, and with Mourinho expected to trim his squad when the transfer window reopens in January, with the likes of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo also facing the exit after failing to impress Mourinho during his first four months at United.

Another Italian side in AC Milan are also being linked with Depay, which could lead to a bidding war between the club and their Serie A rivals Roma.
