Manchester United target Memphis Depay has been told he can leave PSV Eindhoven in the summer.

Depay has attracted interest from the Premier League with both United and Tottenham after a successful showing at the World Cup, and one of PSV’s directors has confirmed that he “has the option to leave this summer” should a club meet his valuation.

Toon Gerbrands also revealed that Spurs were willing to pay 20 million euros last summer to sign him following his performances in Brazil, but PSV decided to turn down their approach in the knowledge that interested clubs will return for him and the club would still make a handsome profit.

Gerbrands was quoted in the Manchester Evening News as saying: "Tottenham were willing to offer 20m euros for Depay. We decided to keep hold of him.

“But he has the option to leave after this season.

"I think these two players [Georgino Wijnaldum included] are very attractive to a lot of clubs in Europe. So far, no one has come forward with an offer but I expect we will come under great pressure."

Depay was one of five players that were linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, with the club reported to have sanctioned another £150m spending spree in an effort to return to the top of the English game.

The club spent a similar figure of money last summer on Luke Shaw, Marcus Rojo, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Angel Di Maria and the loan signing of Radamel Falcao, but reports suggest they will move for five world class players to challenge the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

Along with Depay, Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has been repeatedly linked with a move to United, although the German club have shown some resurgence recently after victory over Schalke lifted them to 10th in the table – still well below their season expectations.

Kevin Strootman was another to be linked with a switch to the Premier League, but there are doubts over whether he will be the same player after he suffered a season-ending knee cartilage injury, his third major blow to his troublesome left knee.

Nathanial Clyne and Paulo Dybala were the other two players to be linked with a move to the club in the summer, although their respective futures are somewhat more uncertain given that Clyne faces showdown talks with Southampton by next month and Dybala is likely to leave Italian side Palermo.
