Manchester United transfer news: United could sign 'a Luis Suarez every year' due to club's financial strength

But the club are more interested in Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin Strootman rather than the former Liverpool striker

Manchester United are believed to be so confident that there financial fire power will help them rebuild the club that they have revealed the money is there to sign “a Suarez every year” for the next decade.

According to the Telegraph, United’s record kit deal with Adidas – announced in July this year that will earn the club a staggering £750 million over the next decade – means they are in a position to make a big-name signing each season should they feel the need to.

Luis Suarez completed a £75m switch to Barcelona in the summer, and while the Red Devils won’t be making an immediate move for the Uruguayan, their deal with Adidas allows them to make 10 £75m transfers before the agreement runs out in 2024.

It would also see United smash their club-record transfer fee for a third time in quick succession should they launch such a move, having set a new British transfer record with the £59.7m deal for Angel Di Maria earlier this year. The acquisition of the Argentinian followed the January arrival of Juan Mata for a then-record £37.1m, but the Spaniard could see his place in the United side thrown into jeopardy due to the summer arrivals at Old Trafford.

The club also remain hopeful that a future deal can be negotiated to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to the club he left in 2009. The Portuguese superstar has believed to be unhappy with the recent departures of Di Maria and Xabi Alonso, and there is cause for concern as to how long he will remain with Real Madrid.

A more realistic signing though could be that of Kevin Strootman. The Roma midfielder is believed to have been on United’s radar for some time, and a summer move failed to materialise due only to his long-term knee injury after suffering damage to his cruciate ligament earlier this year, ruling him out of the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign.

The quote that the club could sign the equivalent of Suarez per season came from Kevin Roberts, the founder of magazine SportsBusiness International, while he was discussing United’s extravagant spending in the summer with Sky News.

The problem for United is that should they miss out on the Champions League for a second straight season, the deal with Adidas will be reduced according to the agreement between the two, and it would also have a detrimental effect on the standard of players that could be attracted to the club.

United smashed through the £150m spending barrier this summer, with expensive moves for Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Radamel Falcao accompanying the Di Maria deal. It’s believed that the club are also in a position to exceed the £200m mark in January with a move for Strootman, providing he can prove his fitness and convince manager Louis van Gaal that he can fit in to the squad revamp the Dutchman is currently implementing at Old Trafford.
