Victor Valdes has been offered an escape route from Manchester United with Standard Liège ready to take the goalkeeper on loan until the end of the season.

The former Barcelona keeper has been told he has no future at Old Trafford by the manager, Louis van Gaal, following a dispute last season, which centred on the 34-year-old allegedly refusing to play for United’s Under-21 team.

Van Gaal omitted Valdes from United’s pre-season tour of the United States and has also refused to hand the Spaniard a squad number.

However, despite the player being made available for transfer during the summer window, Valdes remained at the club after a move to Turkish side Besiktas fell through.

Valdes has since been ostracised at United, with the three-time Champions League winner forced to train away from the first team.

He now accepts that he has no prospect of persuading Van Gaal to relent on his decision to banish him to the fringes.

It is understood United would help fund Valdes’ salary at Liège.
