Victor Lindelof was again left out of Benfica’s squad for a Taça da Liga cup tie, as speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United persists.

The Swedish defender was not included in the starting line-up or among the substitutes for his side’s routine 4-0 win over Vizela on Tuesday night, having also missed a 1-0 win over Ferreira in the competition last week.

Lindelof’s last Benfica appearance came in the 2-0 Primeira Liga win over Rio Ave on 21 December.

Everton are expected to come back in for United's Morgan Schneiderlin, having seen their initial £19m offer rejected.

According to the Daily Mail, the Merseyside club are currently preparing an improved offer, closer to United's £24m valuation of the out-of-favour defensive midfielder.

Schneiderlin has fallen out of the first-team reckoning since Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Old Trafford, with his last appearance coming in November's 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

However, according to The Sun, Everton may face competition for Schneiderlin’s signature from the midfielder’s home country.

Marseille are also interested in the 27-year-old, with new majority shareholder Frank McCourt ready to provide manager Rudi Garcia with funds to complete the deal.

Meanwhile, young goalkeeper Joel Pereira has been recalled from his loan at Belenenses.

The return of the 20-year-old is expected to see Sam Johnstone, United’s current third-choice stopper, complete a temporary move to Aston Villa.
