Manchester United’s season has not gone to plan. Last year’s achievement of Champions League qualification, the bare minimum expected of manager Louis van Gaal, was meant to be built upon.

While they find themselves well within the hunt for fourth spot again this term, their stultifying style of play and a number of particularly poor results, not to mention their group stage exit from European football’s elite competition, leave things looking rather bleak at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal emerged through a difficult period at Christmas, where it looked like he was on the verge of being dismissed. Ultimately, the festive period’s heavy concentration of games worked in his favour.

Two days after the gutless defeat against Stoke City, his side’s goalless draw against Chelsea allowed him to put a positive spin on a tough December.

Now it’s January and, as with a number of Premier League clubs, a new face or two would not got amiss. United are especially lacking in attacking areas, where a lack of pace and movement has hindered their play.
