Louis van Gaal has made it clear that Manchester United needs to sign a “Galactico” for the club to stand any chance of competing with their rivals in England and Europe.

Despite bringing in the likes of Memphis Depay and Bastian Schweinsteiger, who collectively cost more than £45m, Van Gaal remains keen to bring in a “big” player to further develop his team.

With the Premier League season set to begin in under two weeks, the United boss admitted that the side still needs another signing to match teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Chelsea. Speaking on United’s US tour, Van Gaal outlined his intent.

“Chelsea have Eden Hazard, he can always make goals," said Van Gaal. "Manchester City have Aguero, it’s the same type. Barcelona have Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez.

“We, as Manchester United, have to compete with these clubs. So we have to look also for these kind of players. When it is possible to buy, for a reasonable price, players from that level, we shall do that, because they are better.”

Van Gaal remarked that his team was far from being the whole package. “With Morgan Schneiderlin, with Bastian Schweinsteiger, with Memphis Depay, with Matteo Darmian, we are better than last year. But we have to be much better and we can use much more creativity,” said Van Gaal.

The Dutchman drew particular attention to Ashley Young comparing the player to Barcelona’s Neymar. “We have to compare. Ashley Young had a fantastic season last time, but he is not a Neymar, and we have to compete with that kind of class.”

United are in desperate need of a forward following Robin van Persie and Radamel Falco’s departure, while Angel Di Maria’s expected move to PSG will only further complicate the club’s issues up front.

Much to the disappointment of fans, Van Gaal dismissed re-signing Ronaldo explaining that he was too expensive. “Of course I would love it,” said the United boss. “But that’s not possible. You have Ronaldo and then you have how much Manchester United want to spend…”

After having been linked to a multitude of big players over the past couple of weeks, including Pedro, Thomas Muller and Edison Cavani, and with more than a month to go until the end of the transfer window the signing of a “Galatico” still remains a possibility for the club.
