Marc-Andre ter Stegen joins Barcelona: Goalkeeper presented as first summer transfer to replace Victor Valdes

Ter Stegen joins from Borussia Monchengladbach with the club hopeful he will become the first-choice goalkeeper for years to come

Barcelona have presented young German Marc-Andre ter Stegen as their new goalkeeper after he arrived in at the Nou Camp to finalise his contract.

In a series of posts on their official Twitter account, Barcelona announced that they had completed the signing of the former Borussia Monchengladbach stopper, who will be tasked with replacing Victor Valdes after the Spaniard left the club when his contract expired.

Valdes’ long-term understudy Jose Manuel Pinto is also expected to leave the club as his contract is also up for renewal, with Barcelona acting swiftly to bring in Ter Stegen before the 2014 World Cup gets underway.

Ter Stegen won’t be a part of Germany’s squad even though he has already made four appearances under Joachim Low’s tenure as manager, with Manuel Neuer, Ron-Robert Zieler and Roman Weidenfeller preferred for the tournament in Brazil.

Speaking after his presentation, Ter Stegen said: “It is a great honour for me and a big challenge.

“This is one of the best clubs in the world and a chance like this doesn’t come your way every day.

“Victor Valdes is a great keeper who has done so much for the club and won so many titles, but I am who I am and that’s that.”
