Manchester United have unveiled Memphis Depay at his first official press conference since completing his £23m summer move from PSV Eindhoven with the winger admitting he has joined to “compete for trophies.”

The Netherlands international remains United’s only transfer to speak of this summer, although that looks set to change imminently after United manager Louis van Gaal confirmed the club are on the verge of signing Torino defender Matteo Darmian.

21-year-old Depay joins United after helping to seal a first Eredivisie title in seven years at PSV, and there is a great expectation surrounding the Dutch youngster that he could develop into one of the world’s best left-sided forwards in the years to come.

Speaking at his first press conference since joining United, Depay said: "I'm very excited. It's a dream come true - I'm very happy to be here.

"This is the biggest club in the world. So we have to compete for trophies.”

Depay added: "I think this team has the quality to win a title, and all the trophies it's possible for us to win.”

The new acquisition has, as is now the normality whenever a left-sided player arrives at Old Trafford, been compared to club great Cristiano Ronaldo, but Depay was eager to play down any comparisons and insisted he will do his talking “on the pitch”.

"He's one of the world's best, but I don't want to talk too much - I want to show my quality on the pitch,” he said.

Van Gaal was eager to praise Depay and believes that in signing the 21-year-old, United have sealed one of the best players of his generation.

"I think he is one of the few high-talented boys of his age. He’s full of confidence,” Van Gaal said.
