Manchester United look to have been overtaken in the race for Memphis Depay after his current club PSV Eindhoven revealed that both Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are ahead in the race for his signature.

Depay looked to be closing in on a move to United after jetting in to Manchester airport on a private jet, but having met with officials from the Premier League club, 21-year-old Depay also spoke with officials from Liverpool which included managing director Ian Ayre, and the Dutchman was left very impressed with the Reds’ interest in him and the way their portrayed their vision for the future.

Having helped PSV to a first Eredivisie title in seven years, Depay looks set to move on this summer with his tally of 21 goals in 28 league games catching the eye of some of the biggest clubs across Europe.

And speaking about Depay’s future PSV sporting director Marcel Brands revealed that both Liverpool and PSG have moved ahead of United in the race to sign the young forward.

“PSG and Liverpool are indeed a step ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Memphis. United have only informed us about their interest,” Brands said when speaking to Fox Sports.

“The list of interested clubs has grown in recent weeks, but Bayern Munich are not among the teams that want to sign him.”

“It’s only logical that there is a lot of movement around Memphis. He is still a young player but is already hugely efficient. He should be proud of that.

“There isn’t usually a lot of movement in the transfer market at this stage of the season. It’s an exception that so many clubs have already shown an interest in Memphis.

“That only illustrates that he’s on the right track.”

The problem for Liverpool is that the absence of Champions League football – should they fail to qualify this season as expected – could hinder their chances of signing Depay, with both United and PSG on course to finish in the Champions League qualifying positions in their respective domestic leagues.
