Manchester United have reached a spoken agreement with Nicolas Otamendi's agent and are expected to complete a deal worth £25 million for the player, according to reports.

The defender, who currently plays for Valencia, has reputedly been offered a four-year deal by Van Gaal. The United manager is attempting to shore up his defence after last season's Premier League campaign.

According to the Metro, United and Otamendi's agent, Eugenio Lopez, are successfully reaching an agreement for £25million. However Valencia are believed to be holding out for £35m for the defender, who is currently at the Copa America with Argentina.

Otamendi played in all but three of Valencia's league matches in the 14-15 season after he returned to Spain from his loan to Atletico Mineiro.

Valencia finished fourth in La Liga this year, allowing them to reach Champions League playoffs and potentially a place in the group stages next year.

United's defensive struggles last season were well documented, with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, Marcos Rojo, Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair all playing at centre-back.
