Arsenal could face competition from north London rivals Tottenham should they decide to pursue their interest in Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang despite the club’s insistence that he's not for sale.
The Gunners are being heavily linked with a big-money move for a striker after club director Lord Harris claimed there is “over £200m in the bank” ready to strengthen the squad. With the likes of Karim Benzema and Edinson Cavani being linked with the club, current No 1 striker Olivier Giroud may find himself in a battle to keep his place should a new man arrive this summer.
One of those being linked with a move is Dortmund’s Aubameyang, whose 26 goals for the Bundesliga club last season saw him emerge as one of the most lethal finishers in the German top flight.
With Arsenal known to be in the market for a new striker should the right deal come along, Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc stressed that the club will “block” any fresh approach made by the Gunners following reports of a rejected £28.5m offer, and reiterated that Aubameyang is not for sale despite talk of a £30m return. However, reports in France today suggest that Spurs could look to rival the Gunners should Aubameyang suddenly become available. The White Hart Lane outfit remain hopeful of offloading misfit striker Roberto Soldado back to Spain, and with doubts over Emmanuel Adebayor’s future also arising it’s expected that the club will seek a new striker to partner England international Harry Kane.
France Football are reporting that Aubameyang has caught the eye of the Spurs’ hierarchy, but with Dortmund insisting that the Gabon international is not available for any price this summer may put off either club from making a fresh move.
Aubameyang has three years remaining on the contract that he signed in 2013 after completing a move from French side St Etienne, and the club are eager not to sell him in a bid to dispel their reputation that they have become a selling club following high profile exits of the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze in recent years.
