The agent of Raheem Sterling has claimed that there has been a "breakdown in trust" between the unhappy forward and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

The 20-year-old England man, a top target for Manchester City this summer, failed to appear at Liverpool training ground Melwood on Wednesday, stating that he was ill.; club doctors will visit Sterling at his home on Thursday.

The Independent understands Liverpool remain firm in their stance on the forward and will not accept anything less than £50million for Sterling, who was recently named the most valuable young player in Europe.

Sterling has already told the club he does not want to travel to Australia and Asia for the club's pre-season tour on Sunday. City have already had two bids rejected and are likely to return with another bid soon, but their own trip to Australia, which starts on Thursday, could slow negotiations.

Sterling's agent Aidy Ward, who has split from West Bromwich striker Saido Berahino, has said that his client's relationship with Brendan Rodgers is broken

"I’m no longer working with Saido. You’ll have to ask him for the reasons. With Raheem, there has been a breakdown in trust between him and Brendan Rodgers," Ward is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

Speaking to the Evening Standard back in May, Ward said: "I don't care about the PR of the club and the club situation. I don't care.

"He is definitely not signing. He's not signing for £700, £800, £900,000 a week. He is not signing.

"My job is to make sure I do the best with them (my clients). If people say I am bad at my job, or they are badly advised it does not matter."
