Manchester United have made a shock inquiry for Southampton striker Sadio Mane, according to reports.

It has been reported that United are interested in the 23-year-old, who signed for the Saints from Red Bull Salzburg for £11.8m in September 2014, and United made the approach last week.

The Senegal international scored 10 goals for the club in all competitions last season.

Three of those goals were scored in 2minutes and 56 seconds - the quickest hat-trick scored in Premier League history in Southampton's 6-1 victory over Aston Villa back in May.

United missed out on long-term target Pedro from Manchester United today. The Barcelona winger is on his way to Chelsea after undergoing a medical with the west London side.

Jose Mourinho's Blues swooped in after United failed to meet the 28-year-old's £22m release clause.

Pedro is thought to have been keen to leave Spain for Old Trafford, despite suggestions in Spain that Louis Van Gaal’s criticism of Victor Valdes and public discussion of David de Gea may have contributed to uncertainty on his part.
