Samuel Eto'o to Liverpool: Reds identify former Chelsea striker as possible replacement for Luis Suarez

Eto'o is currently a free agent and has been linked with other Premier League clubs such as West Ham and Arsenal

Liverpool are the latest Premier League side to be linked with a move for free agent Samuel Eto’o after the Cameroon striker left Chelsea at the end of last season.

Eto’o is on the lookout for a new club after Chelsea elected not to offer him a new deal, bringing in Diego Costa in a £32m deal from Atletico Madrid and resigning club legend Didier Drogba. With a number of clubs interested in the 33-year-old – West Ham and Arsenal were reported to be interested in his services – it appears Liverpool could be the latest club to offer him a chance at adding the Premier League title to his collection.

The Reds are still looking for a replacement for Luis Suarez after selling their talismanic striker for £75m, and they pulled out of an £8.5m move for Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy due to fears over his fitness after a failed medical.

Eto’o is said to have held talks with Ajax regarding a move to the Eredivisie, and a move to Liverpool is far from complete as his name has been brought up as one possible target that the Reds are considering.

The former Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Anzhi Makhachkala striker does have the burden of his hefty wages, although the fact that he would be available on a free transfer does make the move viable for those in the English top flight.

According to the Guardian, Eto’o made around £7m from his one season at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers already has Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert to choose from in attack, while Fabio Borini elected to turn down a move to Sunderland in order to remain at Anfield and fight for a place in the first team. The Reds were reported to have enquired about Radamel Falcao’s availability, but French side Monaco informed them that the Colombian striker will only leave the club to join Real Madrid.
