LA Galaxy have just announced perhaps the biggest signing in the club's history - but did so with a hashtag quickly being panned as the worst of all time.

#StevieLAG was used by the MLS team to confirm that Steven Gerrard would be joining them when his contract expires at Liverpool.

The signing of the Reds skipper is a huge deal for football in the United States, one that perhaps tops that of even David Beckham and Thierry Henry in terms of attracting a top quality player with much to give.

That Gerrard's choice of MLS club was going to be LA Galaxy became apparent shortly after he confirmed he would not be renewing his vows at Anfield - and as such gave the club ample time to prepare a social media offensive to publicise the deal.

Perhaps that's why there has been such disdain for #StevieLAG - a hashtag being interpreted as everything from a misspelling of StevieLAD (as Gerrard might be referred to in Liverpool) to it being a terminology to describe what he will be feeling after his long flights between Merseyside and California.

We take a look at the reaction on Twitter...

Gerrard will join his new club in July.
