Mauricio Pochettino insisted this afternoon that Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen will stay at Tottenham Hotspur this transfer window despite interest from Italian champions Juventus.

Spurs have spent most of this summer trying to move on players who are not in their plans, and they still have to find new clubs for Emmanuel Adebayor and Aaron Lennon, neither of whom have been issued with squad numbers for this season.

Lamela and Eriksen, though, are both in Pochettino’s plans and he was bullish at his press conference on Thursday afternoon about the future of the pair. Lamela was the subject of an enquiry from Juventus earlier in the transfer window but The Independent now understands that he is set to stay at the club for his third season at White Hart Lane.

“I never speak about rumours, it is nothing to comment on,” Pochettino said. “Lamela is part of my plans for the team. We need Lamela to show his real quality, and we hope that this is the season he really shows his quality.”

Pochettino was just as clear that Eriksen, his important number 10, would not be heading to Turin before the window shuts on 1 September. “He is happy here,” Pochettino said. “He has a contract here. We keep the best players for the present and the future, to be a good squad in the next few years to fight for the top four – and win the Premier League one day.”

Regardless of whether Tottenham can move on Adebayor and Lennon – which they are no closer to doing – they will continue to be active in pursuit of one more forward, whether Saido Berahino or one of their second-tier targets. “It's obviously we need to add some more in our offensive position,” Pochettino said. “The chairman is working very hard to bring new players in this position but I am happy with my squad.”
