Roman Pavlyuchenko, the Russia striker, last night claimed he was on his way to White Hart Lane after insisting that a verbal agreement had been reached between Tottenham and his club, Spartak Moscow.

The 26-year-old, who impressed in Russia's run to the semi-finals of Euro 2008 over the summer, told Russian journalists that he would not feature in Spartak's Champions League third-round qualifier against Dynamo Kiev and is in the process of obtaining a visa to allow him to fly to England and agree terms with Juande Ramos's club.

"I can confirm I am joining Spurs," the striker said. "Everything has happened very quickly so I could not even say goodbye to my team-mates."

Spartak's general manager, Valery Karpin, confirmed that the club have accepted a bid from Spurs.

"There is a concrete sum which Tottenham Hotspur proposed and we have agreed the amount," he said.

Pavlyuchenko scored three goals for Russia during the Euro 2008 finals, and twice in a 2-1 win over England in a qualifying match. His arrival may have no impact either way on Dimitar Berbatov's future at White Hart Lane.

Spurs are short on strikers even if the Bulgarian does not complete a move to Manchester United before the transfer window closes on Monday.

Dunn and Rovers in contract talks

David Dunn could be set for a new deal at Blackburn after making an immediate impact with manager Paul Ince. The 28-year-old midfielder, named as vice-captain by Ince, scored in the victory at Everton on the opening day of the season. While he has nearly two years to run on his current deal, Blackburn are due to talk to Dunn after the transfer window closes.

Ince said: "He has done ever so well. From day one he has been a leader. Dunny is a local lad and everyone looks up to him. I gave him the responsibility of being vice-captain and he has taken it on board. If any player performs well, whether it is Dunny or anyone else, then we will look to see if we can extend their contract. But first and foremost we need to get the next couple of games out of the way."

Ince is set to wrap up a £4m deal for Torino midfielder Vince Grella today. Australia international Grella, 28, underwent a medical at Blackburn's training ground yesterday after agreeing personal terms with Rovers chairman John Williams. The holding midfielder, who won the first of his 36 Australia caps in the 3-1 win against England in 2003, has spent the last 10 years in Italy with Empoli, Parma and Torino.

Jacobsen signs Goodison contract

Everton have completed the signing of Denmark right-back Lars Jacobsen on a free transfer. Jacobsen, 28, who was with German club Nurnberg last season, underwent a medical yesterday and has agreed a one-year deal. Everton confirmed yesterday that Jacobsen had finalised his switch to Goodison Park. He will be available for Saturday's game against Portsmouth providing Everton receive his registration from the German football association. Moyes will hope Jacobsen is the first of several signings this week, with the need to bring in new faces before Monday's transfer deadline. The Everton manager suggested he required "six or seven" new players, some of which could be brought to the club on loan.

Baros quits France for move to Turkey

The former Liverpool, Aston Villa and Portsmouth striker Milan Baros has travelled to Istanbul to finalise his transfer to Galatasaray. The Czech Republic international is set to sign a three-year deal with the Turkish club, who announced on their website that they came to an agreement late on Monday with Lyon over the transfer of the 26-year-old. Baros joined Lyon from Villa last year but struggled to secure a regular place. He was sent on loan to Portsmouth for the second half of last season and returned to the Stade Gerland during the summer.
