Transfer news: Any move for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez would break Gareth Bale's £86m world-record fee, claims Edinson Cavani

Paris St-Germain striker Edinson Cavani has claimed that his Uruguayan compatriot Luis Suarez would break the world-record transfer fee set by Gareth Bale’s move to Real Madrid should he decide to leave Liverpool.

Bale left Tottenham in the summer for a £86m fee, breaking the previous record set by Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to the same club in 2009, but Cavani has claimed that the 26-year-old striker would be worth even more if a team were to come in for the Anfield star.

Cavani, who joined PSG from Napoli for £55m earlier this year, believes that Suarez in his current form is worth more than Bale, having witnessed him score a first-half hat-trick against Norwich on Wednesday on his way to netting four times and providing the assist for Liverpool’s fifth goal in the 5-1 victory.

The former Napoli ace admits that both Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the leading players in the world, but claims Suarez is not far behind.

“Yes all of the four goals Luis (Suarez) scored were of the highest quality,” Cavani said. “But nothing he does surprises me because I know what he is capable of.

“I don’t know his future - but if he is sold I am sure Liverpool will want a world-record fee for him. The record was broken in the summer - and for me Luis is at a higher level than that.

“He is the only player that I think is on the same level as Ronaldo and Messi.

“If two or three of the biggest clubs in Europe show interest in him - then I think he could break the world-record fee for sure - and with the way he is playing you would have to say he is worth it.”

Suarez was the subject of an intense pursuit by Arsenal in the summer, with the Gunners offering £40m plus £1 for his services which was instantly rejected by officials at the Merseyside club.

Cavani’s comments could upset one of his team-mates though, with the admission that Suarez is the only one on a level with Messi and Ronaldo likely to rile striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede has already admitted "I don't need the Ballon d'Or to know I'm the best."
