Spanish champions Barcelona have rubbished claims that Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is top of the wanted list after speculation linked the Catalan club and the Argentinian.

Reports in Spain suggested that Aguero, who scored in yesterday’s 3-2 victory at West Brom, with a January move to the Nou Camp, despite constant links between the 25-year-old and Barcelona’s fierce rivals Real Madrid.

It has also been said that Barcelona could hold off on making a move until the summer, with manager Gerardo Martino choosing to play without a recognised striker so far this season after the departure of Spaniard David Villa. Lionel Messi and summer addition Neymar have shared the bulk of leading the line, but they suffered the first defeat in the league this season last weekend going down 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao.

City have since dismissed the notion that Aguero could leave the Etihad, and Barcelona’s vice president Josep Bartomeu has also spoken to stress that the club have no plans to enquire about Aguero’s availability.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Bartomeu said: “No, we have had no contact with him.

“I can say that the story is not true.”

Aguero has quickly formed a formidable partnership with Spanish striker Alavaro negredo since his estimated £16m move from Sevilla. With Aguero having already scored 17 times this season in all competitions, he is certainly attracting attention from the biggest clubs in Europe, while Real have constantly been linked with a move for either the Argentine or Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini spoke out to calm any fears that Aguero could be inching closer to an exit, claiming: “I don't know anything about that. I don't think Sergio wants to leave. That is not a problem for us. I don't believe in that.”
