Transfer news: Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay claims David Moyes blocked his move to Manchester United
Argentine says the new United manager 'did not believe in him'
Ezequiel Garay has claimed that he did move to Manchester United over the summer because new manager David Moyes did not “believe in him”.
The Benfica defender had been linked with a move to Old Trafford towards the end of last season, and the 27-year-old said he was close to joining the Premier League champions but the move collapsed after Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down, and his successor Moyes did not want to match Benfica’s reported £18m asking price.
“I believed I was going to join Manchester United in the summer,” the Argentine said. “The deal was nearly closed but finally Benfica did not accept the offer.
“I believe the exit of Ferguson has influenced the deal. Moyes did not believe in me as much but that's not a problem.
“I am happy at Benfica and have a lot of dreams and ambitions for this season. Now I only think about the present which is Benfica but it's never possible to discard anything in the future.”
