The prospect of Cristiano Ronaldo re-joining Manchester United receded further after Carlo Ancelotti marked his first match in charge of Real Madrid by insisting he wanted the player to stay in Spain.

Speaking after Ronaldo scored twice in the 6-0 rout of Bournemouth Ancelotti said: “I think Ronaldo is the most important player in the team; he is the player with the best quality. I think his future is with Real Madrid, there is no question about that. I don't think [he will be allowed to leave].

There has been regular speculation that Ronaldo, who has two years left on his Madrid contract, wishes to return to Old Trafford where he received a very warm reception at last season's Champions League match.

Ancelotti said he also hoped to hold on to Gonzalo Higuain, who has been a summer-long target for Arsenal. “ He is very important for us. He scored within a minute [of coming on as a substitute]. I would like him to stay with us.”

The coach dismissed reports emanating from Italy that fee had been agreed with Napoli. “I have no news of that. It is not true a fee has been agreed.”
