David De Gea has encouraged Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas to join Manchester United and has claimed that he would be a great signing and improve the current squad.
The United player won the Premier League goalkeeper of the year award last season at the age of just 22, and he has set his sights on establishing his name in the English top flight, which he hopes to do so playing alongside his Spanish compatriot.
De Gea, speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, said: “He'll have to make a decision whether to stay at Barcelona or join us. He'd be a great signing as he'd help us improve a lot.
He also admitted to trying to persuade another Spanish midfielder to move to Old Trafford in Thiago Alcantara, but saw Bayern Munich and Pep Guardiola beat David Moyes to his signature.
“Yes, I tried to convince him (Thiago), but it wasn't to be,” said De Gea. “He chose to join Bayern, which is a great club, and I'm sure he'll do well there.”
Moyes is believed to be preparing a third and final bid for Fabregas, having seen offers of £25m and £30m firmly rejected by the Catalan club.
Barcelona could be tempted by a larger bid though, with reported financial issues at the club emerging after they signed Brazilian star Neymar in a £48.5m deal from Santos.
Fabregas left the Premier League in 2011, having spent eight seasons with Premier League side Arsenal. The Gunners midfield now contains another Spain international in Santi Cazorla, and De Gea believes more of his fellow countrymen should move to England to boost its following there.
“It's normal that Spaniards should want to come here,” claimed De Gea. “It's important that there are more Spaniards so that the Premier League is followed more in Spain.
“It's the best organised league. Everything is well organised on every level, even financially. You can see this; the players know it. It's a very attractive league and I like it a lot. The grounds are full for most games.”
Fabregas has also bought a flat in the Belgravia area of London, after winning a court battle with his girlfriend’s ex-husband.
Daniella Seeman's former partner Elie Taktouk has been forced to sell their marital home to Fabregas at a knock-down price after a judge ruled he must pay Seeman £1.4 million in a settlement, with the property being used as payment.Reuse content
