Transfer news: David Luiz could be the latest player to ask for a move in effort to swap Chelsea for Barcelona
Spanish champions are confident that the Brazilian defender will ask for a transfer on Monday despite Jose Mourinho's insistence he is not for sale
Barcelona are hoping that central defender David Luiz will tell his current club Chelsea that he wants a them to let him move to the Nou Camp in an effort to force through a move to the La Liga champions.
The Catalan club saw an initial bid for the Brazilian centre-back rejected on Wednesday, and Blues boss Jose Mourinho warned Barcelona officials not to return with a second bid as they will be wasting their time.
Despite his words, Barcelona still hope to land Luiz, with a belief that Mourinho is attempting to increase the price they would have to offer for the 26-year0old rather than actually trying to warn them off.
Liverpool defender Daniel Agger also remains on the Spanish club’s radar, although the Reds have just named the Danish international as vice-captain to Steven Gerrard, replacing the recently retired Jamie Carragher.
Earlier this week, Mourinho had strong words for opposite number Gerardo Martino, suggesting he won’t sell Luiz under any circumstance.
“The bid? It's lost time for them, claimed Mourinho.
“My advice to them is to go to the second player on their list because they are wasting their time. We don't want to lose our best players. No chance.”
Luiz missed Chelsea’s International Champions Cup final on Wednesday, when they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat to Mourinho’s former club Real Madrid.
Despite their failure to clarify Luiz’s injury that forced him out of the Miami clash, it is unlikely they would want to sell Luiz having not made a defensive signing this summer, with John Terry, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic the other options at Stamford Bridge as well as the returning Nathaniel Chalobah, who returns from a season-long loan at Championship club Watford.
