Manchester United’s search for midfield reinforcements has led them to Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan, although they could face a fight with Real Madrid to sign the Germany international.
With Anderson set to join Fiorentina on loan, it is believed David Moyes has stepped up his interest in 23-year-old Gundogan whose contract expires in 18 months and is valued at £25m.
Part of the attraction is that the midfielder is not cup-tied for the Champions League as he has been out for most of the season with a back injury, although German newspaper Bild reports that Real are also admirers.
“I will soon make a decision that will be well considered. It’s still really open,” Gundogan said yesterday.
“Dortmund are my first point of contact. I will make a considered decision soon but I am keeping my options open at this point.
“I’m just trying to be healthy and to get back on the pitch,” he added. “This is important and a top priority for the club and for me.”
Meanwhile, Everton are close to tying up a new contract for England defender Leighton Baines to ward off interest from United. Having completed the sale of Nikica Jelavic to Hull yesterday, Everton are believed to have offered Baines a new deal worth around £75,000 a week.
Nacer Chadli has become the latest Tottenham player to express a desire to leave after struggling to adapt to the Premier League. According to his agent, the Belgium winger – who signed from FC Twente in the summer for £7m – wants to go on loan to keep alive his hopes of playing in the World Cup.
“His situation is not easy at the moment. The World Cup is arriving so it’s a problem,” said Daniel Evrard.
Veteran striker Kevin Phillips, 40, has signed a deal with Championship leaders Leicester City until the end of the season, having left Crystal Palace.
