David Moyes has made a unexpected move for Juventus star Claudio Marchisio as Manchester United continue in their search for an anchoring central midfielder to halt their mid-season slump.

The 27-year-old is a product of the Turin club's academy and would initially be hesitant to leave Italy.

United, however, are willing to part with £20m to sign Marchisio which will wipe out the £17m loss suffered as a result of the Serie A leaders' premature exit from the Champions League.

The Daily Express suggest that Juve are considering the offer and may sacrifice their long-serving midfielder after 187 appearances for the club.

The recent form of Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal has deemed Marchisio surplus requirements at the Old Lady but the Italian is wary of moving halfway through the season as it may damage his chances of a World Cup place.

United will hope they can persuade him otherwise though, promising first-team football until the end of the campaign, and may be able to make something happen if successful.

Moyes recently expressed doubt that the Red Devils would be able to secure their leading targets this month but Juve's exit from the European competition has offered a lifeline.

He said: "I think most of the business will be more towards the summer rather than January.

"We have a good, big squad that is getting stretched at the moment because of the number of games."
