Nani gave David Moyes a reminder of what he can do, scoring twice against Crewe Alexander as part of a Manchester United XI in the wake of claims he has been offered to AS Monaco.
Yesterday, Vadim Vasilyev, who has overseen the arrivals of Radamel Falcao, Ricardo Carvalho, Joao Moutinho and a whole host of other signings since the club were promoted back to Ligue 1, claimed that United offered the Portuguese international.
Speaking to French newspaper L’Equipe, he said: “He has been proposed to us. He is a very good player, but there have been no talks so far.
“We have already changed our group quite a bit and we also want to offer opportunities to our young players. We still have time to make a few alterations before the end of the transfer window, if needed.”
However, Nani hasn’t expressed a desire to leave Old Trafford, despite frustration growing among fans with the belief that he has not yet fulfilled his potential, with the added pressure of following in Cristiano Ronaldo's footsteps.
Nani has fluctuated between the virtuoso and the brainless at times, culminating in his sending-off against Real Madrid in the Champions League first knockout round second leg last season.
It was the virtuoso Nani on display yesterday though, scoring his first goal after he won a free-kick on the edge of the area. The Portuguese winger struck the free-kick – once a flare from the United fans had been cleared off the pitch – in a fashion not too dissimilar to his international team-mate to give his side the lead.
And he followed the strike up with a second goal, jinking past two defenders and staying on his feet to wrong foot the goalkeeper before slotting into the bottom corner of the net. Nani was very impressive during his 65 minutes on the pitch as part of a youthful looking side, although both Nemanja Vidic and Antonio Valencia also took part as they continue their recovery from injury.
With just a year left on his contract, Nani will want to hit the ground running to impress Moyes into ensuring his future lies with Old Trafford, and he will be in direct competition with Valencia and new signing Wilfried Zaha – who looks set to be given a chance to shine at United – along with Ashley Young for the two wing positions.
