Roberto Martinez has reportedly refused an offer to splash out in the January transfer window, as he looks to steer Everton into next year's Champions League.

The new Everton boss is reportedly going to be offered up to £10m to spend in January but is unwilling to dip into what is often an overpriced market.

He is hopeful instead of bringing long-term target Aiden McGeady in from the cold at Spartak Moscow for a free.

The 27-year-old's contract expires in the summer and Martinez, who tried to sign the Irishman as Wigan manager, hopes he can persuade the Russian club to part with him early.

Martinez will also be boosted by the imminent return of Arouna Kone and Darron Gibson from injury, while a possible third loan spell for Landon Donovan has also been suggested as the Toffees look to bolster their squad on the cheap.

Everton have already made good use of the loan system this season with Romelu Lukaku, Gareth Barry and Gerard Deulofeu all making an instant impact at Goodison Park.
