Transfer news: Tottenham 'interested' in Barcelona defender Marc Bartra but move dependent on David Luiz or Daniel Agger making Nou Camp switch

22-year-old has become frustrated with the lack of first team football after his agent claimed he is '25,000 times better than Alex Song'

Tottenham are looking into the possibility of signing Barcelona central defender Marc Bartra, but the deal is believed to be dependent on the Catalan club signing either Chelsea’s David Luiz or Liverpool’s Daniel Agger.

Bartra is said to be unhappy due to limited first team chances last season, with the 22-year-old behind Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano, Carles Puyol and Alex Song in the centre-back pecking order.

He rose through the La Liga club’s youth ranks alongside fellow defender Marc Muniesa, who was allowed to join Stoke earlier this summer.

Despite having issues at the back during last season with doubts over Puyol’s long-term fitness and Pique and Mascherano missing periods through injury and suspension, Bartra only made 16 appearances throughout the campaign, leading him to look elsewhere for regular football.

Former Arsenal defensive midfielder has been deployed as cover at the back – much like Mascherano following his move from Liverpool – but Bartra’s agent has been quoted in the Spanish media as saying: “Bartra is 25,000 times better than Song as a central defender.”

The Spaniard has made 16 appearances for the Spanish Under-21 side but is yet to make his senior debut.
