Transfer news: Valencia could bid for Chelsea striker Fernando Torres should Tottenham complete signing of Roberto Soldado - reports

Valencia newspaper Superdeporte are reporting that the Spanish club could make a £25m bid for Torres to try and replace out-going striker

Valencia could make a move to replace the seemingly Tottenham bound striker Roberto Soldado with Chelsea’s Fernando Torres with reports in Spain claiming they could make an audacious £25m offer.

Torres’ time at Chelsea has been well publicised after his £50m move from Liverpool in 2011, and although he has won a Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League with the Blues, he has been criticised for failing to hit the heights he did at Atletico Madrid and Liverpool.

According to Valencia newspaper Superdeporte, contact has been made with the west London club, and they are awaiting confirmation on the Spaniard’s availability.

Valencia look set to receive £26m from selling current lead-striker Soldado to Spurs, but their financial predicament means they can’t afford to bid any higher for his replacement, meaning that a second bid for Torres would be unlikely to happen.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has given returning manager Jose Mourinho the go ahead to bring Wayne Rooney to Stamford Bridge, with a second bid likely to be launched next week. The addition of the England striker would likely spell the end of either Torres’ of Demba Ba’s Chelsea careers, with youngster Romelu Lukaku likely to be given a chance to shine at the club.

Alternatives for Valencia include Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, former Tottenham target Heider Postiga and Manchester United poacher Javier Hernandez, although coach Miroslav Djukic is aiming higher to try and plug the gap that Soldado would leave at Valencia.

Torres turned 29 in March, and he is a year older than Soldado, but he may be attracted back to his homeland after not having the best of spells with Chelsea.  His record stands at 34 goals in 131 appearances, though less than half of those have come in the Premier League with 19 coming in other cup competitions.
