Transfer talk: Manchester United plotting bids for Raphael Varane and Nigel De Jong; Jackson Martinez boost for Tottenham and Arsenal

Manchester United are plotting a £35m bid for Real Madrid's highly-rated defender Raphael Varane, according to reports in Italy.

A centre-back is top of Louis van Gaal's priorities for the summer, with the club also linked with Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels.

The 21-year-old Varane has also reportedly interested Chelsea. The French international had previously worked with Jose Mourinho when the 'Special One' was Real manager.

Another player linked with a summer move to Old Trafford is Nigel De Jong, the Dutch midfielder who left rivals Manchester City to join AC Milan in 2012.

The 30-year-old is available on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Manchester City are working on a move for Burnley striker Danny Ings, who is also available on a free in the summer, according to the Manchester Evening News. However, The Independent understands that Liverpool are set to win the race the sign the much-coveted 21-year-old, who has scored seven Premier League goals this season.

 

It's bad news for United, Arsenal and Chelsea - Sami Khedira has reportedly reached an agreement to join Bayern Munich at the end of the season, when his contract runs out.

Reports in Spain suggest that a deal had been agreed for the German World Cup winner to return to the Bundesliga. The 27-year-old midfielder had previously played for Stuttgart between 2006 and 2010 before signing for Real.

Arsenal and Tottenham target Jackson Martinez, the Colombia international, has given his suitors a boost by hinting that he could leave Porto in the summer.

"Right now I only focus on doing my job with Porto, but I'm ready to make the leap in the next window," the 28-year-old striker said.

"I have my head focused only on the work I'm doing at Porto at the moment and when the transfer window reopens, we shall see what will happen."
