Redknapp repels 'money-back' bid for Gomes

Manager Harry Redknapp has received an offer for Heurelho Gomes but wants to keep the goalkeeper after he turned around his poor early-season form.

Gomes, who arrived from PSV Eindhoven in the summer for around £7m, was guilty of a series of blunders but has been much improved since the arrival of coach Tony Parks.

"I know a club from abroad that want to give us our money back for him," Redknapp said. "That's genuine. I've been looking round for a little bit of goalkeeping cover... but this boy's shown unbelievable character."

Lovenkrands heads for week-long trial at St James' Park

Peter Lovenkrands, the former Rangers winger released by Schalke, is to begin a week's trial at the club today. "He's out of contract but he is coming in for us to have a look at," said Chris Hughton, the Newcastle assistant manager. "He is is an experienced player with pace. So I think it gives us an opportunity to look at him. There is work going on behind the scenes to bring in the two or three players we need."

Blades confirm bid for striker Beattie

The Sheffield United chairman, Kevin McCabe, has confirmed Stoke have made an approach for striker James Beattie but insists no deal has been done.

McCabe echoed manager Kevin Blackwell, who earlier revealed there had been an enquiry by the Premier League club but he also added that a replacement had been lined up should Beattie move to the Potteries. Stoke have bid £2.5m for Beattie.
