Johnson's new Portsmouth deal hands boost to Adams
The defender Glen Johnson has signed a new four-and-a-half year contract with the club. The 24-year-old England international is now committed to the Fratton Park outfit until the end of the 2012-13 season. The deal is a fillip for the manager Tony Adams following the recent losses of Lassana Diarra and Jermain Defoe to Real Madrid and Tottenham respectively. Johnson has got his career back on track at Pompey after an unhappy spell at Chelsea.
The right-back was tipped for stardom after coming through the youth ranks at West Ham but he failed to establish himself at Stamford Bridge following a £6m transfer in 2003. He joined Pompey on loan in 2006 and the move was made permanent for £4m the next year. He has made 83 first-team appearances for the club and has been a regular in Fabio Capello's England squads.
"It's great news," Adams said. "This is a good place for him. He's got back in the England squad since he came here."
Bowyer move bolsters McLeish's squad
The club have completed the loan signing of the West Ham United midfielder Lee Bowyer until the end of the season. The 32-year-old will become Alex McLeish's fifth signing of the January transfer window after Keith Fahey, Robin Shroot, Scott Sinclair and Hameur Bouazza all joined the Championship side. McLeish said: "Lee's a dynamic player and I want to bring a dynamic look to the team. Roy Aitken, one of my assistants, worked with him at Leeds and knows him as an attacking midfielder but he also knows that Lee can give a lot to the team."
Allardyce waiting for massive Roque bid
The manager Sam Allardyce has urged Manchester City "to blow us out of the water" as the Roque Santa Cruz transfer saga continued. The City manager Mark Hughes yesterday confirmed the club had made a "significantly higher" bid than the £12m offered during the summer for the striker, only for Rovers to say no. "I can't second guess what City are going to do," Allardyce said. "There is always going to be a price, but there is no price we are going to put on Roque's head. It is down to Man City to make the offer and blow us out of the water."
Gow's move collapses after hitch in medical
Alan Gow's move to the club is off after the Rangers forward failed a medical at the Championship leaders. The 26-year-old had agreed a move to Molineux after the Ibrox side accepted a fee reportedly in the region of £250,000. The Wolves manager Mick McCarthy said: "It's nothing serious, it's something bio-mechanical, but that's something for Alan and Rangers to sort out, not us."
Kavanagh's career at Stadium of Light ends
The Republic of Ireland midfielder Graham Kavanagh has left the club by mutual consent. The 35-year-old, one of six men to sign for Roy Keane on the final day of the summer transfer window in August 2006, has agreed to end his contract after spending two months on loan at League One Carlisle. Kavanagh made only 15 appearances for the club after being hampered by a knee injury.
