2018 Russia World Cup in numbers

Peru have not qualified to the World Cup in 32 years, but finally booked a spot for Russia after a 2-0 victory over New Zealand in the second leg of their play-off.

However, their preparation has been badly disrupted by captain Paolo Guerrero's failed drugs test, and while he is available for their World Cup opener against Denmark, his availability has not gone without its controversy.

The Danes will clearly hope to take advantage of this, with Age Hareide's squad looking to make a comeback after their failed attempt to propel themselves out of their group back in 2010.

Kep player Christian Eriksen is also in good form after scoring a hat-trick against the Republic of Ireland in the play-offs.

Two down, two to go!

There has been plenty to enjoy so far during this feast of football that is Saturday, and we guarantee that there is even more to come. VAR and Lionel Messi have made the headlines so far, who will be the talk of Russia tonight?

We'll have all the action from Croatia versus Nigeria this evening but first we're at the Mordovia Arena for the day's second Group C game.

Good afternoon and welcome to The Independent's live coverage of the match between Peru and Denmark at the 2018 World Cup.

And here's Denmark. They arrive in Russia via the qualifying play-offs and appear to be adjusting well to life under new stewardship in Aage Hereide.

Peru have travelled to Russia in huge numbers...

...while Denmark have at least one supporter in the stadium.

Christian Eriksen was voted into the Premier League's team of the season following an impressive campaign with Tottenham. Can he now take that form, and his showings in qualifying, to the world stage?

Don't look to the form for a guide to who will come out on top here...

...both countries arrive at the tournament in fantastic shape.
