Euro 2012 Diary: Greek may need altar-native date
Friday 22 June 2012
The Greece midfielder Giannis Maniatis may be forced to miss his own wedding, should his side overcome the odds and reach the final of Euro 2012.
The Olympiakos player is due to tie the knot on 1 July, the day of the final. His team would however have to beat Germany tonight, and then England or Italy, for the situation to become a problem.
"He won't be at the wedding!" said winger Dimitris Salpigidis. "He arranged the wedding a year and a half ago, when he didn't even know if we'd be at Euro 2012, let alone that he'd been in the team."
Maniatis is expected to start in midfield against Germany today.
Meanwhile, in Aldershot...
There must have been stranger footballing sights than the Dalai Lama giving a talk at Aldershot's ground, but we can't think of any.
Too much Euro 2012 proves fatal
A 26-year-old man from Changsha, China, has died after attempting to watch every single kick of the ball at Euro 2012.
Jiang Xiaoshan, who was said to be supporting France and England in the tournament, died on Tuesday morning after the Ireland v Italy match. He was reported to have come home at 5am, having gone up to 11 nights without sleep.
A mixture of exhaustion and the effects of tobacco and alcohol was blamed for his death.
