Flashback: No 1. Uruguay 1930: the first World Cup

Jose Nasazzi, the captain of Uruguay, and his Yugoslavia counterpart Milutin Ivkovic are presented with flowers prior to the semi-final between the two at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo at the inaugural World Cup in 1930.

Having won the Olympic football competition in both 1924 and 1928, the hosts were expected to win and duly eased aside Yugoslavia, one of only four European countries to enter along with Romania, France and Belgium, 6-1. In the final they faced Argentina, a rematch of the Olympic final two years previously, and came from 2-1 down at half-time to triumph 4-2.

Thus, Nasazzi, El Gran Mariscal ("The Grand Marshal"), and reckoned to be Uruguay's best ever player, became the first man to lift what became known as the Jules Rimet Trophy.
