Iran leader Hassan Rouhani cut a lonely figure as he watched his nation's goalless draw with Nigeria last night, in a Twitter picture of his one man World Cup watching party.

There was something faintly sorrowful about the image, which saw Rouhani sat in an empty room opposite a TV joined only by a bowl of nuts and a box of tissues.

The latter may have come in useful as the Group F clash left many viewers bored to tears, a match described as "the first really poor game spectators have seen in Brazil."

This didn't stop Rouhani trying to put a positive spin on it however, writing alongside the image: "Proud of our boys who secured our first point--hopefully the first of many more to come."

Iran is the only squad from the Middle East in the World Cup, and will face a markedly stronger challenge in their next match which will see them face the might of Argentina.

Rouhani's World Cup celebrations may have been fairly reserved but over in the US last night there was dancing in the streets, as the country's team scored a rare World Cup win over Ghana.
