With Russia already out of the 1994 finals in the US, their last group game, against Cameroon in Stanford, offered little of interest for neutrals. Enter unknown striker Oleg Salenko, who destroyed the African side to become the first, and only, player to score five goals in a single World Cup finals match.

The 24-year-old forward had scored his hat-trick by half-time, before grabbing two more midway through the second half. He ended the tournament as joint top scorer with six goals. Salenko only won nine caps, and never scored in an international before or after the 1994 finals. He wasn't the only player to achieve a feat in the match – in scoring Cameroon's goal, Roger Milla became the oldest World Cup scorer of all time, finding the net at the age of 42.
