Rooney to learn fate next month

Wayne Rooney hopes a reduced ban will let him play in the group stages at Euro 2012 (EPA)

Wayne Rooney's appeal against the three-match ban which is threatening his Euro 2012 participation will be heard on 9 December, Uefa has announced.

Uefa's appeals body will deal with the case of the England striker a week after the draw for the Euro 2012 tournament. Rooney was given a red card for violent conduct in England's last qualifier against Montenegro.

Uefa said in a statement: "The Uefa appeals body will deal with the case of England striker Wayne Rooney on Friday 9 December at Uefa's headquarters in Nyon. This follows Uefa's receipt on Friday 4 November of the official written appeal from the English Football Association against the three-match suspension given to Rooney by the Uefa control and disciplinary body on 13 October."

The victim of Rooney's challenge, defender Miodrag Dzudovic, has already written to Uefa to lend his support to the striker.

Rooney, though, admitted recently he has only himself to blame, telling several national newspapers: "Obviously, it's devastating for me but it's something that's my own fault, so I can't really complain.

"It was stupid by me – I regretted it as soon as I did it. It's no excuse, but I still feel the punishment is a bit harsh. I'm disappointed with it.

"All the details we have been waiting on have come through, so we'll be making a decision as to whether we will be appealing. Even if it's reduced by one game, it will be a bonus for me."

Rooney was left out of Fabio Capello's latest squad as the England manager tried out several alternatives in attack against Spain on Saturday and Sweden last night.
