David Beckham scores his first England goal
David Beckham made his first World Cup appearance at France 98, and as always, his participation was complicated by off-field matters.
Beckham had played in all of England's qualifying matches, but was dropped by Glenn Hoddle for the first two games of the tournament. The England manager publicly accused the midfielder of not concentrating on the tournament.
Golden Balls was finally given a full run-out for the final, must-win, group stage game against Columbia - and he was to answer his critics in trademark style.
On 29 minutes, Beckham curled in a sublime free-kick, his first goal for the Three Lions, and with it made the score 2-0 and ensured England reached the last-16.
