World Cup qualifier round-up: Henry gives breathing space to Domenech
Friday 12 September 2008
The France coach, Raymond Domenech, has Thierry Henry and Nicolas Anelka to thank for keeping him in the job after a 2-1 victory over Serbia in Wednesday's World Cup qualifier.
Henry, France's captain in the absence of Patrick Vieira, and Anelka got a goal each in the second half in Paris to give Les Bleus a boost after they were beaten by Austria on Saturday. "We needed it after the defeat to Austria," Henry said.
Defeat would certainly have ended Domenech's reign, and another disappointing result was looming until Henry broke the stalemate. Anelka then added a second with a clinical finish before Branislav Ivanovic grabbed a consolation goal for the Serbs. Despite the win Domenech's job is still on the line and French fans want him out. He was jeered throughout and loud chants of "Domenech, démission [resignation]" echoed around the Stade de France.
Carlos Queiroz experienced a dramatic home start as manager of Portugal when Daniel Jensen's stoppage-time winner gave Denmark a 3-2 victory in a match which featured four goals in the closing seven minutes.
In South American qualifying Brazil and Argentina endured more frustration with draws against the bottom sides Bolivia and Peru respectively. Brazil were jeered by their own fans in a goalless stalemate at home to Bolivia, who played the last 35 minutes with 10 men.
