Athletics: Campbell will get run for money from in-form rivals

The former European 100 metres champion Darren Campbell faces formidable opposition in tomorrow's Fanny Blankers-Koen memorial meeting in Hengelo. Campbell, eager to compete at this summer's European Championships, is up against 2003 world champion Kim Collins at the Dutch meeting.

However, the Olympic 4x100m relay gold medallist is likely to find Olusoji Fasuba more of a handful after the Nigerian ran an African record of 9.85 seconds two weeks ago.

The Commonwealth silver medallist achieved that performance when finishing runner-up to the Olympic and world champion, Justin Gatlin, when the American equalled the world record in Doha.

Campbell, who competed at the Qatar meeting but failed to make the final, is adamant he can race himself into form to ensure a place in the side for the European Championships in Gothenburg on 7 August. Hengelo offers Campbell an opportunity to impress the selectors, with Collins and Fasuba capable of breaking the 10-second barrier. Collins is determined to produce a fast time on his return to international action, having recovered from the injury which prevented him defending his Commonwealth crown.

Joining Campbell at the meeting are British 800m No 1 James McIlroy, 1500m specialist Tom Carter and Commonwealth bronze medallist Andy Turner, who contests the 110m hurdles.

Joice Maduaka and Emma Ania compete over 100m, Kate Reed tackles the 5,000m and Commonwealth bronze medallist Lee McConnell is in the 400m hurdles event.
