Baseball: Red Sox keep fighting

The Boston Red Sox's 4-2 win on Tuesday over their bitter rivals the New York Yankees levelled an already remarkable American League Championship series. The Red Sox fought back after three straight defeatsand put themselves in a position to make baseball history going into last night by becoming the first team to overturn a three-game deficit in a best-of-seven series.

The World Series introduced a seven-game format in 1909. Championship series in the American and National leagues have been decided over the best of seven games since 1985.

The Red Sox had starting their pitcher Curt Schilling and Mark Bellhorn, who hit a three-run home run, to thank for their latest victory. Schilling gave up only one run, on a solo home run by Bernie Williams in the seventh inning.

The Yankees' first three victories in the series included a 19-8 victory in the third game. But the Red Sox won two dramatic extra-inning games at home to force a sixth contest.

"I guess it was supposed to go to Game Seven," said the Yankees manager, Joe Torre.
