Newcastle Eagles' pursuit of their third title of the season gathered pace on Saturday night when their second victory in 24 hours, by 77-72 at Leicester Riders, took them level with Scottish Rocks at the top of the British Basketball League.
The veteran American TJ Walker scored the game's two final baskets to shake off a dogged Leicester still adjusting to the walkout of their 6ft 11in England international Robert Reed who quit just ahead of last weekend's BBL Trophy final defeat to the Eagles.
The trophy gave Newcastle their second title of the season after lifting the BBL Cup in December and now they have their sights on the Rocks, who had two games in hand ahead of their fixture last night against the bottom club Birmingham Bullets.
Sheffield Sharks moved up to third with an 80-76 win at Crystal Palace to inflict a first defeat in five games over the fourth-placed London Towers. The Sharks stayed ahead after two Iain McKinney three-pointers opened a 66-64 lead.
The Bullets won only their fourth league game of the season on Saturday, by 95-88 in overtime against Plymouth Raiders.Reuse content
