Boxing: Maskaev fight lined up for Williams after Tyson win

Danny Williams will fight Oleg Maskaev on 9 October at the ExCeL Centre in London's Docklands in his first bout back since beating Mike Tyson in Louisville 10 days ago.

Danny Williams will fight Oleg Maskaev on 9 October at the ExCeL Centre in London's Docklands in his first bout back since beating Mike Tyson in Louisville 10 days ago.

Williams and the Uzbekistani boxer will fight for the vacant World Boxing Union heavyweight title.

Maskaev, who has a 29-5 winning record, was once linked to a fight with Tyson. He was also due to spar with Williams but the pair never met.

The 35-year-old has beaten Julius Francis and Hasim Rahman in his 11-year professional career and is now based in New York.

"I wanted to make sure Danny was kept busy and offered him this fight in October," the fight's promoter, Frank Warren, said.

"After this, we will keep going wherever the money is because when Danny fought Mike I told him it was his ticket to the big American fights.

"I've had talks with Showtime [a US TV network] about doing a show involving Danny in December."

Warren added that a rematch with Tyson is an eventual possibility. "Danny has got Mike's number," he said.

Matt Skelton will defend his British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles against Keith Long on the undercard at the ExCeL Centre.
