British trio's bronze-medal sprint

The Olympic sprint trio won bronze in Antwerp last night to earn Britain's first medal at the World Cycling Track Championships. After silvers in each of the last two years, the men's team of Craig McClean, Jason Queally and Chris Hoy – runners-up at the Sydney Olympics – put up perhaps their most valiant effort of all this time.

McClean gave them a good start, putting them ahead of Spain in the ride-off for bronze, and Queally maintained the lead before Hoy battled bravely to bring the team home first.

France took the gold medal, while Australia won silver.

The defending champion Yvonne McGregor is on course to win another medal in the 3,000m individual pursuit – but not gold. Fourth after the qualifying round, she raced against her team-mate Emma Davies in the semi-final and proved too strong for her opponent. Tomorrow she rides against the Russian Elena Tchalykh for the bronze medal.
