Hockey: Jennings goal-burst helps Guildford salvage pride

The absence of five internationals in the England training squad in Gibraltar, proved too much for Guildford, the English champions, to overcome on the opening weekend of the Indoor season at Kidderminster. They were able to salvage just one victory in their four games – an 8-5 win against East Grinstead thanks to a six goal burst from their player-coach Ian Jennings.

Loughborough Students and Old Loughtonians finished the weekend with the only maximum points record in the Premier Division. Students followed up their opening 10-2 victory against Stourport with a 9-4 win against Guildford while Loughtonians were also very much among the goals with Paul Dover and Nicky Thompson leading the way. The weekend's top-scoring feature fell to the former England international Rob Hill who netted seven in Yeovil and Sherbornes 11-6 win against St Albans.

In the women's Premier at Haslemere, Slough were the only team to take maximum points although they were made to struggle against Jane Sixsmith's Sutton Coldfield who led after an early Liz Perry goal before the Berkshire side went on to win 7-4. The day's outstanding game at Haslemere was between Chelmsford and Canterbury with both sides demonstrating the best of Indoor tactics before Canterbury ran out 7-6 winners to deny Chelmsford a 100 per cent record.
